The Problem

Do you want to improve your English speaking skills? Do you want to be able to keep a conversation going? Are you frustrated by the slow progress you're making on your own?

My Solution

I believe group classes are the fastest, most effective way to become more advanced and confident English speakers, but I saw many options for group classes that were already available to students. I wanted to do something different, so I started my book club back in 2020 because I thought talking about books could be fun for adult English learners wanting to practice their spoken English with others. Today, many of my students enjoy the book club so much that they stick with it for months, even years!

Why join my book club?

✅Participate in more advanced conversations with other English learners

✅Grow more confident in your English speaking skills

✅Learn new vocabulary and expressions in context

✅Receive feedback from a certified English teacher

✅Improve your spoken English while also improving your listening and reading skills!

How It Works

Each week for 2 months, we read a few chapters of the assigned book on our own, and I give you a list of vocabulary words and expressions that might be new to you so that you have access to it while you read.

We meet as a group to discuss the reading during a 35-minute live discussion on Zoom once a week. I create a list of discussion questions to guide our conversations, but I welcome your questions as well!

After each discussion, I share personalized feedback with you so you know how you can improve, and I occasionally share general feedback with the group based on common mistakes. I use the Telegram app to do this.

Frequently Asked Questions

When and where does the book club meet?

We meet every Monday at 8:30pm ET / Tuesday at 1:30am GMT and Wednesday at 9:00am ET / 2:00pm GMT on Zoom for 35 minutes (You'll receive the link when you sign up!). Decide which day and time work best for you! We meet for 8 weeks at a time. If there's a month that has 5 weeks instead of 4, we will take one of those weeks off.

How much does the book club cost?

The book club costs $16 for 2 months of membership.

How much reading do I have to do each week?

This depends on the length of the book we're reading, but it's typically 25-30 pages a week and never goes over 30 pages. (Note: You do NOT have to do any reading before the first discussion!)

How many students are in the book club?

There is a maximum of 5 students for each of the live discussions. I will open additional days and times if needed.

Which book are you reading next?

We are currently reading The Housemaid by Freida McFadden through March. Stay tuned for when my book club opens again in April!

Will I need to buy my own copy of the book?

Yes, you will. I check that the books we're reading have both physical and electronic copies available. Please check with me before buying your book to make sure it's the correct one!

What happens if I miss a discussion?

If you miss a discussion, you're welcome to try to attend another day/time to make it up. Otherwise, you'll just have to make sure you're prepared for the following week's discussion. Since this is a group program, there are no cancellations or reschedules offered.
