Some students believe writing will always be their Achilles' heel.
That was the case for Allie, an 8th grader who came to me struggling with her writing assignments, looking for writing classes for homeschoolers. Her confidence was low. Her paragraphs were long and confusing. Her grammar was all over the place. She genuinely thought she couldn’t ever be good at writing.
Fast forward 2.5 years…not only did Allie turn writing into one of her strengths, but she began earning As and enrolling in college courses two years early. Here’s how we did it, step by step.
The Challenges Allie Faced
When I first met Allie, she struggled to:
Write clearly and concisely
Organize her ideas into paragraphs or essays
Avoid common grammar errors like run-on sentences and sentence fragments
Writing assignments were a constant source of frustration. But I knew this wasn’t due to a lack of ability; it was a lack of foundational skills.
Our Tutoring Approach
We worked together for two and a half years, meeting 1-2x a week for an hour. Here’s the step-by-step approach we used to rebuild Allie’s writing skills:
Building the Basics
We started with grammar essentials: avoiding run-ons, fixing fragments, and using FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) with commas to connect sentences.
I taught her how to write clean, concise sentences and later paragraphs.
Mastering Structure
We broke writing into manageable steps: brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and editing.
I walked her through the parts of a strong paragraph (topic, supporting, and concluding sentences) and essay (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion).
Staying On-Topic and Focused
We practiced breaking down writing prompts so she always understood what was being asked.
I helped her identify off-topic sentences she had written and avoid repetition.
Research and Citations
I taught her how to find reliable sources and include proper in-text citations and reference lists.
Editing and Independence
Over time, Allie learned to spot and correct her own mistakes through editing exercises.
She gained confidence in improving drafts independently.
Progress didn’t happen overnight. It took consistent effort, but Allie’s writing transformed in incredible ways:
Clarity: Her sentences became smoother, more concise, and easier to follow.
Organization: Her paragraphs and essays followed strong, logical structures.
Grammar: She reduced errors dramatically and became confident with tools like FANBOYS and semicolons.
The results spoke for themselves. Allie went from struggling with writing assignments to earning As consistently!
After two and a half years of hard work, Allie felt ready to take on more. She enrolled in college-level courses two years early and thrived, even in writing-heavy classes. The change wasn’t just academic. Her confidence in herself grew by leaps and bounds.
In her mother’s words:"You are wonderful and you have been a huge blessing! Allie loves you. She has said many, many times that you are extremely smart and she has learned so much from you. Thank you for being such a great tutor!"
A Future Full of Possibility
At the beginning of our journey, Allie thought her future was limited because she couldn’t write well. But with time, persistence, and the right support, she not only mastered writing but started seeing her own potential. She even began to think about going into teaching and helping others gain confidence in their abilities the same way she did! That’s the true power of growth.
Final Thoughts
Allie’s story and her experience taking writing classes for homeschoolers prove that writing doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and no student is “too far behind” to succeed. When you break skills down step-by-step, celebrate progress, and stay consistent, incredible transformations happen.
